Upper Playground and Fifty24LA Gallery Present “Brave Souls Illuminate” A Collection of New Works by Maria “Toofly” Castillo Maria “Toofly” Castillo is a painter and illustrator from New York. Growing up Queens, Toofly immersed herself in graffiti culture and developed her own knack for handstyles and unique “around the way girl” characters. “Brave Souls Illuminate” is a re-mix of new, and existing works that showcase Toofly’s growth as young woman drawing and writing on the walls to a mature well respected fine artist, designer, and visual arts producer. Her existing works takes you on a journey of a self proclaimed, “around the way girl” using hard and fluid lines, handstyles, and self confidence to declare a spot in NYC’s graffiti subculture dominated by men, and fierce attitude. Her new works re-introduce the shades of grey that originally helped her pull in the raw emotions she grew up with, and surfaces new and improved. As she travels to reconnect time and space, the new pieces not only feel and look more mature, yet bring you back to the core of her spirit: ”A brave being who looks to shine bright unapologetic from the inside out!” ”Brave Souls Illuminate” features new works and an installation on display at FIFTY24LA Gallery from November 11 – January 4, 2009.

CALL FOR WOMEN ARTISTS- HAIR

Posted in Call For Entries, Uncategorized on June 23, 2009 by theyounity

C A L L  F O R  E N T R I E S
Down to There: Women and Their Relationship to Hair
A Juried Exhibition of Art by Women
Sponsored by the Koehnline Museum of Art and the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at Oakton Community College.
For centuries, hair has been both a woman’s crowning glory and her greatest curse. While affording opportunities for
personal creativity, self-expression, and rebellion, hair also serves as a vehicle for harmful and limiting discourse regarding
gender, ethnicity, and femininity. Hair permeates contemporary culture—from Madison Avenue to Hollywood, hip hop to
religion. Hair holds up a mirror to women’s body images and health and well being. Artists are invited to submit a work that
thoughtfully examines the myriad ways this fraught and fascinating relationship shapes our individual and shared experiences.
Where: Koehnline Museum of Art, Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines, IL, 847-635-2633
When: The exhibition runs Tuesday, October 27 through Friday, November 6, 2009. A public reception will be held
Tuesday, October 27, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. Artists are encouraged to attend this special event and discuss their work with
students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Who: Artists who identify as women are invited to submit one work for consideration. Artists must be 18 years of age or
older. Work by students is not eligible for this exhibition.
Jury/Entry Fee: No entry fee.
Submission of Work: Each artist may submit one original work for consideration. Work should relate to the theme,
“Women and Their Relationship to Hair.”
