CALL FOR WOMEN ARTISTS- HAIR

Posted in Call For Entries, Uncategorized on June 23, 2009 by theyounity

C A L L  F O R  E N T R I E S
Down to There: Women and Their Relationship to Hair
A Juried Exhibition of Art by Women
Sponsored by the Koehnline Museum of Art and the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at Oakton Community College.
For centuries, hair has been both a woman’s crowning glory and her greatest curse. While affording opportunities for
personal creativity, self-expression, and rebellion, hair also serves as a vehicle for harmful and limiting discourse regarding
gender, ethnicity, and femininity. Hair permeates contemporary culture—from Madison Avenue to Hollywood, hip hop to
religion. Hair holds up a mirror to women’s body images and health and well being. Artists are invited to submit a work that
thoughtfully examines the myriad ways this fraught and fascinating relationship shapes our individual and shared experiences.
Where: Koehnline Museum of Art, Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines, IL, 847-635-2633
When: The exhibition runs Tuesday, October 27 through Friday, November 6, 2009. A public reception will be held
Tuesday, October 27, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. Artists are encouraged to attend this special event and discuss their work with
students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Who: Artists who identify as women are invited to submit one work for consideration. Artists must be 18 years of age or
older. Work by students is not eligible for this exhibition.
Jury/Entry Fee: No entry fee.
Submission of Work: Each artist may submit one original work for consideration. Work should relate to the theme,
“Women and Their Relationship to Hair.”
